ThornShield Labs

Building the Next Layer of Intelligent Security

At ThornShield Labs, we research, design, and develop technologies that connect physical security, wireless signal intelligence, AI-assisted analysis, and intelligent automation.

Our work focuses on turning emerging technologies into practical tools for identifying, understanding, and responding to security-related events. Projects featured here are in various stages of research, prototyping, development, and validation.

Featured development

What we're building

Three lines of work, each combining sensing, analysis and automation to give security teams a clearer view of what is happening around them.

Status: Active Development

Drone Detection & Monitoring

Exploring technologies for detecting, monitoring, and analyzing drone activity using broadcast Remote ID information and wireless signal observations.

Detection depends on supported signals, receiving hardware, range, terrain and environmental conditions, and on applicable regulations. Not every drone broadcasts Remote ID. This work is limited to passive observation of broadcast signals; it does not interfere with drone control or communications.

Development areas

  • Remote ID signal detection and interpretation
  • Drone activity monitoring
  • Geospatial visualization
  • Historical observation and event analysis
  • Wireless signal correlation
  • Automated monitoring and reporting
Prototype Drone Remote ID Monitor: a map with a reconstructed flight track beside a table of timestamped telemetry points, with identifiers and coordinates blurred.
Development build: a flight track reconstructed from broadcast Remote ID telemetry. Identifiers and coordinates are obscured.
Status: Experimental Prototype

Wireless Signal Intelligence

Developing tools for observing and analyzing nearby wireless device activity, with an initial emphasis on Bluetooth Low Energy technologies.

Observations describe device activity and signal characteristics, such as advertised device types and signal strength over time. Address randomization, varying transmit power and the physical environment mean they cannot always establish a device's identity, its owner or its exact location.

Research areas

  • Bluetooth Low Energy discovery
  • Signal strength and observation analysis
  • Device identification and classification
  • Historical signal footprint analysis
  • Wireless activity visualization
  • Automated monitoring and notifications
Prototype Bluetooth scanner: a list of nearby BLE devices with signal strength bars, a proximity radar and a signal distribution summary, with device addresses and names blurred.
Experimental prototype: nearby BLE advertisements grouped by signal strength. Proximity rings are estimates from signal strength, not measured distances. Device addresses and names are obscured.
Status: Research & Development

AI-Assisted Security Analytics

Investigating the application of artificial intelligence and computer vision to security monitoring, event interpretation, and operational automation.

These are research directions, not released or validated capabilities. Detecting an object, classifying an event and verifying a person's identity are distinct problems with different limits. Our approach treats AI output as input to human review, not as a decision.

Research areas

  • Camera-based object detection
  • AI-assisted event classification
  • Recognition and visual analysis technologies
  • Correlation of security-related events
  • Automated alerts and reporting
  • Integration with existing security systems

How we work

Research with clear boundaries

Authorized, defensive use

Our research is aimed at protecting sites and systems that their owners have authorized us to monitor or assess.

Observation, not interception

We work with signals devices openly broadcast and events security systems already record, not private communications.

People make the decisions

Automation surfaces and organizes information. Interpreting it and deciding what to do remain with trained people.

Project status

Development stages

Each project carries a label describing where it is in development. Labels describe stage, not product readiness or certification.

01Research & Development
Investigating approaches and assessing what is technically practical.
02Experimental Prototype
A working prototype used to test ideas under controlled conditions.
03Active Development
Core functionality is being built and refined.
04Validation & Testing
Being evaluated against defined scenarios before any wider use.
